Heal Act

The HEAL Act, passed in 2021, is a law in our state that aims to ensure everyone has a healthy environment. It's the first law of its kind here, and it makes environmental justice—fair treatment of all people regarding environmental laws—a top priority. This law tells several state agencies (like those handling health, agriculture, and transportation) to work together to identify and fix environmental problems that affect vulnerable and overburdened communities the most.

HOW?

We will achieve our goals through comprehensive community education and engagement efforts. This includes outreach programs, guided tours, regional meetings, and an Elder Advisory Committee. By empowering our community with knowledge about environmental impacts and preparing them for future challenges, we aim to inspire action and ensure equitable outcomes through collaboration with the Department of Health and the Environmental Justice Coalition

WHY

We are undertaking this initiative because our Pacific Islander community is deeply affected by climate change and environmental injustices, both locally and on our islands. Rising sea levels are endangering our ancestral lands, while in the United States, our community faces the impacts of extreme weather and environmental hazards.

Culturally, our project is crucial as it aims to preserve and protect our heritage, traditions, and way of life against these threats. By educating and empowering our community locally, we also contribute to global efforts to address climate change and advocate for environmental justice. It's about ensuring our voices are heard, our stories are valued, and our future is safeguarded for generations to come.

Island Echoes

From islands kissed by ocean's grace, We rise to guard our sacred place. Histories deep, our cultures grand, Colonization couldn't steal our land.

A new battle now calls our name, As climate shifts and earth's aflame. Oceans rise, lands grow thin, But in this fight, we will begin.

Justice flows in island veins, In ancient chants and monsoon rains. From elders’ wisdom, young ones learn, To guard the shores for which we yearn.

We call for justice, loud and clear, For future generations near. To heal the earth, to mend the skies, For islands green, for lullabies.

In unity, we find our strength, To go to any needed length. With climate justice as our guide, We stand as warriors, side by side.
